Why Crash Dieting Does More Harm Than Good

When trying for weight loss in West Chester, sometimes the thing that prompts us to try and lose weight is an upcoming event, such as wanting to get into a bathing suit for summer or looking good for a wedding or reunion. The temptation is high to follow a diet that promises rapid weight loss in West Chester in a short amount of time, but often these crash diets do more harm than good and can even result in long lasting consequences. In this article, we’ll discuss why crash dieting is bad for you, the long term consequences of a cycle of long term crash dieting, and what you can do for effective weight loss in West Chester!

crash diets

What is a Crash Diet and Why is it Bad?

Crash diets are famous for promising unbelievable results with minimum effort in a short period of time, but what do they entail exactly? Most crash diets have a poor diet and questionable supplements in common. They usually involve drastically cutting back on the number of calories you consume during the day, and sometimes have complementary supplements which are nothing but diuretics. While practitioners may notice rapid weight loss at the beginning of such a diet, often the weight lost is nothing but water weight and, if continued, will result in muscle loss as well.

When you follow an extremely low calorie diet, the first thing that happens is that your body uses up its stores of carbohydrate, also known as glycogen, as well as the water that is stored with it, in the liver and muscles. This is what prompts the weight loss in the beginning. Once these carbohydrates are used up, the body starts using proteins in the muscles for energy, which can leave you feeling tired and irritable.

Soon, the metabolism slows down, putting your body into a kind of starvation mode, because it doesn’t know when it will start receiving healthy nutrients again. Then, when you go back to your previous eating habits, you’re likely to not only put back on the weight you’ve lost, but add more pounds as well, because the metabolism is still too slow to keep up with the new intake of food.

Worst Case Scenarios

Those that put themselves of a constant cycle of crash dieting and eating poorly are doing a lot of damage to their bodies which could result in potentially life threatening illnesses. Due to their restrictive natures, crash diets could prevent you from eating healthy foods with nutrients that your body needs to function properly, such as iron, B12, potassium or sodium. These could lead to deficiencies that can cause other problems, like nerve and muscle functions and heart attacks. They also cause a great deal of problems for organs like the liver and kidneys, because without the proper nutrients, the organs can’t function properly. Finally, not getting enough calcium in the diet can lead to the development of osteoporosis, which makes bones brittle and more prone to fractures.

Eat a Balanced Diet for Better Results

If you’re trying for weight loss in West Chester, resist the temptation to follow a crash diet and look for healthier alternatives instead. Gradually change your eating habits and your proportion sizes so your metabolism won’t drop too quickly, and pair your new eating habits with a fitness routine, and you’ll be losing weight in no time. Think of your new good habits as a lifestyle change instead of a temporary diet.

You may not lose weight as quickly as a crash diet can promise, but you’ll be doing it in a much safer way and the weight is more likely to stay off. For safe and effective weight loss in West Chester consider hiring a personal trainer. Personal trainers ensure that you will achieve your long term goals by changing up your routines and keeping you motivated!

Five Tips for Making NEPA Fitness a Priority

Committing to a West Chester fitness program is really hard. It’s tough to stay motivated when you are the only one saying you have to do it. It’s hard to see the fruit of your labors when some of them are only measurable with a doctor’s complex testing and instrumentation. It’s exceedingly easy to be consumed by the pressing responsibilities of life and it’s really easy to tell yourself that one more day won’t make a difference.

To make West Chester Fitness a priority in your life, you need to give yourself as many reasons and as many helpful tools as you can. Here you’ll find five great tips for making fitness a priority in life, rather than an afterthought.

5 Tips To Make Health And West Chester Fitness A Life Priority

Clarify your undeniable need for fitness, enlist some help, and pencil—no pen—fitness in to make sure that you live well and live long.

  • Write it down—what gets done in the course of your day? The things you’ve made time for. Exercise should be top of that list because it is what will ensure that you are around to do more and live better. Schedule time for fitness just as you would for getting dressed, working, and attending important meetings. Block out your time for fitness in your daily planner first so that you make the time. Schedule exercise in at a time that makes sense and the rest around it.
  • Buddy up—get a friend to be your fitness buddy; or, if a friend isn’t interested or available, partner with a like-minded acquaintance at the West Chester fitness center and make him or her your friend and fitness buddy. Having a buddy makes fitness fun and (close to) painless and helps you support each other. You’ll find that the reasons you give your buddy to go on work for you, too!
  • Make a list—list all the reasons why you want to get fit and be healthy. This helps you set fitness goals, motivates you with clear reasoning, and works as a reminder for those times when ambition is waning. Refer back to your fitness list to see what goals you’ve accomplished, what goals need revamping or replacing, and for general motivation.
  • Reward yourself—create a reward system as further motivation; with one caveat—your reward cannot be food. Give yourself something worth working for, something that promotes fitness, and something with lasting motivational power. A spa treatment, new clothes/wardrobe, a long weekend or vacation, or new recreational or even fitness activity are some good rewards to start with.
  • Look to the pros—the guidance and support of a good personal trainer is unbeatable as a prioritization strategy for West Chester fitness. A personal trainer will help you in innumerable ways by making exercise more enjoyable, more ‘do’-able, providing ongoing information and support, structuring a fitness program tailor-made for you, and being a general source of motivation. You’ll find that keeping that appointment time and being accountable to someone else helps, too.

You’ll find these five simple tips for prioritizing fitness in your life will go a long way toward your success on the West Chester fitness trail. Small changes like these can make a big impact and really help you keep your good health and well being at the forefront of your list of things that need doing.

Finish What You Started – Cut the Fat for Good with a West Chester Fitness Trainer!

A West Chester Fitness Trainer Reports! There’s no question about it – making the commitment to work off that extra fat is no easy task. Not only is it hard getting your new fitness program off the ground, but you’re sure to encounter pitfalls along the way. Don’t beat yourself up or quit when you meet an obstacle, jump over it! Staying motivated is the best way to ensure that you’ll meet your fitness goals. In this article, we’ll explore how you can stay motivated in all stages of your fitness journey and how a West Chester Fitness Trainer can help.

In the beginning

You may start off your fitness program with plenty of enthusiasm, but many of us start finding excuses to miss an exercise session or two as early as two weeks in. You’re sore and tired and you’d rather just stay at home. Of course you’re sore! You’re using muscles that haven’t been used in quite a long time, it’s perfectly normal. Make sure your body gets plenty of rest, but don’t fall for this well worn excuse. If imagining how amazing you’ll look and feel when you reach your goal seems too far out of your grasp at this point, give yourself a short term goal.

For example, create a goal that says that after six weeks of constant exercise, you’ll finally treat yourself to that luxury item you’ve had your eye on. Once you reach the first six weeks, make a new goal and work towards that. The time it takes to reach your final goal will be different for everyone and doesn’t have a definitive date, so create a solid goal that you can reach in the short term. A West Chester Fitness Trainer can help you stay on track so that you not only reach your short term goals, but your lifetime goal of being fit and healthy!

Pitfalls in the middle

The most common pitfall most of us will face on the path to our goal is a fitness plateau. All of a sudden, the numbers on the scale, the measurement of your thighs, or the amount of weight you can lift all stays magically the same, well before you’ve reached your goal. Does this mean that you’ve done as much as your body can handle? No way! Our bodies are incredible machines and will work hard to achieve their maximum capacity at whatever task we give them, but eventually the body will become so efficient that it no longer needs to use as much energy or burn as many calories to perform the task at hand.

This usually happens when you do the same exercises over and over again, so the solution may be as simple as changing the intensity of the exercise or the exercise itself. A West Chester Fitness Trainer can help you make the necessary changes to push through the plateau and continue on your way.

Those last five pounds

It’s true; the less fat you have to lose, the harder it is to get rid of it. Those infamous last five pounds can be a killer to push through, but think of how excited you’ll be to know you pushed through and stuck to your commitment from the beginning until the very end. If you’re having trouble getting past those last five pounds, consider consulting a West Chester Fitness Trainer, who is helpful during all stages of reaching your fitness goals. A West Chester Fitness Trainer can help design a fitness plan for you from the beginning, give you ideas or pushing through your plateaus, and keep you motivated all the way to the end, when you’ve reached your goal.

Injuries, Strains and Sore Muscles A Personal Trainer in Downington Can Help

A personal trainer in Downington understands that experiencing soreness the day after a work out isn’t uncommon. After all, you’re pushing your muscles beyond what they’ve been used to doing. But sometimes we mistake injuries and strains as sore muscles and push through the pain, which can lead to lasting damage. In this article, we’ll take a closer look at why muscles become sore, what you can do to help prevent soreness, and why working with a personal trainer in Downington can help you avoid injuries and strains.

Why do we get sore?

If you’re exercising correctly, muscle soreness should be very minimal, but those that are just beginning or have recently intensified their work outs may experience muscle soreness the day after a work out. This phenomenon is called delayed-onset muscle soreness, or DOMS, and generally occurs twelve to 36 hours after an intense work out. There are two factors that contribute to DOMS; a build up of waste products in the muscles and miniscule tears in the muscles. Not only are the muscles sore, but symptoms can also include feeling stiff, weak and tired. A personal trainer in Downington understands DOMS and will know how to safely and effectively get you passed it without injury or strains.

Avoiding soreness

Working out shouldn’t leave you feeling tired and sore, but energized! You can help your body better recover by taking care of your body before and after your work out. Make sure you’re getting plenty of sleep, as exercise will only exacerbate the tired feeling, and take an appropriate amount of rest between work outs, so your muscles have time to recover. A personal trainer in Downington suggests always warm up your body for at least ten minutes before any kind of intense work out, because exercising “cold muscles can lead to strains and injuries.

Stretching after a work out is just as important, as it encourages the blood flow to return to the organs and discourages lactic acid from building up in the muscles, which contributes to soreness. Finally, make sure you’re getting enough fuel for your body. Food give your body the energy it needs to work out efficiently, so consider adding a small snack an hour before your workout and eating a healthy meal afterwards, to help your muscles better recover.

Getting the help you need

If you’ve already tried some of these techniques and are still experiencing soreness after your work outs, chances are that you may have strained a muscle. A muscle is considered strained when it has worker harder than its capacity and it actually tears. If you don’t notice significant improvement over a period of a few days, you may need to seek medical advice.

It is, of course, very easy to avoid injury by making sure you’re using exercise equipment safely and not pushing yourself beyond your limits by consulting a personal trainer. Working out with a personal trainer in Downington has many benefits for you, including designing a fitness regime that’s right for you, encouraging you along the way, but most importantly, making sure you’re working out safely and efficiently. A personal trainer in Downington will be able to advise you about your muscle soreness, when you should seek medical advice, and how to avoid injury all together.

You Stand To Gain A Lot From Cross Training And Exton Personal Training

Cross training is achievable with Exton personal training. No matter who you are, what you fitness goals are, or what your top targeted result for working out is, you can benefit from cross training. All you need to know to get you started is why cross training is a good idea for you and where you can learn more about the best cross training methods and techniques to enhance your fitness plan.

Cross Training—What Is It?

Cross training is, in simplest terms, diversification of your fitness program. Cross training happens when you mix exercises and/or types of training, or alternate training methods. Exton personal training can help, especially if you run out of ideas. This may be done in a single workout session or by the day. Here are a couple of examples:

  • Day one you go for a jog, day two you hit the free-weights, day three you go biking
  • Or

  • A third of your time you use the treadmill, a third you work on strength training, a third you use the stair climber

There’s really no one recipe for cross training, as the exercises will vary depending on your goals, focus, and interests. This means that there are endless combinations and possibilities for cross training, and that only you and your personal trainer can decide what will work best for you. Ideally, that will be a carefully chosen mix of exercises and activities that gets you where you want to be.

Cross Training—Why Do It?

Cross training is a good idea for many reasons, and there a number of benefits to cross training as enhancement to a fitness plan.

Cross training helps you by:

  • Breaking up the boredom—admit it, anything you do everyday gets old eventually; it is very motivational to be able to look forward to something new and interesting. Exton personal training can help you with new ideas.
  • Waking up your body—your body gets bored and used to the same movements over and over, too
  • Preventing injury—repeated use and strain of the same joints and muscles opens the door to use injuries; using new joints and muscles strengthens the body all around so that aggravation is minimized and peripheral support is increased
  • Increasing gains—again, this comes from presenting new challenges to muscle groups; cross training helps break and prevent plateaus. With Exton personal training, you can learn more about these advantages.

The reasoning behind cross training is fairly simple and straightforward, but the compound benefits are many.

Cross Training—Where Can I Learn More?

To develop an effective plan for cross training, rely on your interests, your goals, and Exton personal training. Figure out what is enticing to you, what you ultimately want to achieve, and then learn the right way to mix and match exercises and activities—and do them right (and safely!). The person most qualified to help you make those decisions and give you that education is a personal trainer.

The benefits of cross training are there for the taking. Look at the many ways you can spice up your fitness plan with Exton personal training and get started on a new route to better fitness results today!

West Chester Fitness Training Exercises for Busy Professionals

West Chester Fitness Training experts understand that when you’re working fifty hour weeks, exercise is probably the last thing on your mind. It’s very easy to fall into the trap of grabbing fast food and crashing on the couch after a difficult day at work before catching a few hours of sleep and starting all over again. The truth is that exercise can help even the busiest professionals stay in top form, sleep better, reduce their stress and even complete tasks without fading at the end of the day. In this article, we’ll take a look at how busy professionals can make time for exercise.

Pencil it in

Any professional worth his salt has a calendar filled to the brim with meetings, appointments and deadlines. Why not pencil in time for exercise, too? If you’re really ready to make a commitment to improving your lifestyle, schedule exercise into your routine and treat it like an important business meeting. Once you’ve added it to your regular calendar, you’ll be surprised at how easily everything else falls into place. At the same time, don’t beat yourself up if something unavoidable comes up and you have to cancel. Just don’t use this as an excuse to cancel the rest of your exercise appointments for the week! A West Chester Fitness Training expert can help you stay on track by holding you accountable!

Exercise at Work

If you truly can’t get away during the day, there are plenty ways to incorporate a little fitness into your daily routine. A West Chester Fitness Training expert has a view suggestions! Obviously, try to always take the stairs. Instead of emailing a question to a colleague on another floor, take the time to go ask the question in person. Set an alarm on your computer to remind you get up once an hour to stretch your legs and your arms. Even a quick break can be refreshing. Clip a pedometer on your belt and try to achieve between 6000 and 10,000 steps a day.

If you have your own office, you can even incorporate exercise equipment into your routine. Try sitting on an exercise ball, which will strengthen your abs and back while you work, or lifting dumbbells while you’re on the phone. Even if you work in a cubicle and don’t want to be seen with your exercise equipment, keep a couple of bottles of water in a drawer and use them as dumbbells when you can.

Office Fitness Programs and More

Upper levels of management are quickly learning that when their employees are healthy, they tend to work more efficiently, so exercise can benefit everyone in the workplace. Some companies have taken the initiative to start fitness programs in the office with the help of a West Chester Fitness Training expert.

Finally, if you live close enough to work that you can commute by foot or bicycle, consider making this change. Not only will you be doing something healthy for yourself, but it’s healthier for the environment as well!

Remember, you don’t have to make these fitness changes all by yourself. Seek out the advice of a West Chester Fitness Training expert. A personal trainer will take your busy schedule into account when setting out a fitness program for you, and help you come up with even more ideas on how to incorporate more exercise into your busy lifestyle.

The Miracle Cure For Bad Habits: Exercise At Your West Chester Health Club!

Even for those who go to the West Chester Health Club, bad habits are hard to break and good habits are generally ignored. Fortunately, there is a way to use a good habit—exercise—to replace several old ones. Trading one life improving good habit for many of your old sounds good, now, doesn’t it?

Balancing Life With Exercise

Experts agree that the most effective way we as humans can change bad habits is to replace or override them with a good habit. In fact, without replacing a bad habit with a good one, a void is left where bad habits tend to creep back in.

Exercise at the West Chester Health Club is the ideal replacement for many bad habits because it not only acts as its own reward system but it also takes the emphasis away from more harmful habits. The time you spend exercising takes time and attention away from bad habits and by default decreases them without consciously trying; let’s take a look at a few examples:

  • By scheduling time for exercise at your West Chester Health Club, you are making a priority of you. This gives you time to reflect and de-stress as you improve overall health and ultimately self-image.
  • Exercise naturally helps control blood chemicals and hormones, which results in better mood and appetite control, along with lending numerous health benefits.
  • The time spent exercising is time that is not spent overindulging in food, sitting and being inactive, or taking part in a harmful bad habit like smoking. (Incidentally, studies have shown that just five minutes of exercise can decrease cravings and nicotine withdrawal symptoms).
  • Regular exercise requires self-discipline; self-discipline in anything generalizes and translates into increased self-discipline in another.
  • Exercise works as a refocusing agent; rather than dwell on your yearning to fall back into that bad habit, you become distracted by your exercise efforts.
  • Exercise is both its own reward and an effort worth rewarding. Humans thrive on rewards and positive reinforcement, so the rewards of exercise and the subsequent allowable rewards further promote the demise of bad habits.
  • Exercise at your West Chester Health Club makes you feel better all around. Very simply, when you feel better you are more prepared to face difficult tasks (like breaking bad habits).

Enlisting Help

As mentioned, bad habits do not break easily; enlisting the support of friends and professionals, and pairing that with regular sessions at a gym can be of great help. The West Chester Health Club environment is social (if you want it to be) and active. The atmosphere of like-minded success, particularly when paired with the attention and support of a personal trainer and/or exercise buddy, increases your chances of keeping the exercise habit and using it as a healthy, effective alternative to the bad habits you’ve longed to replace. And when it comes to a task as paramount as staying motivated to break bad habits, you can always use all the help you can get.

A Journey of a Thousand Miles Begins with the First Step!

You can’t find a more cliché quote than that, yet it is remarkably powerful and true. It is especially powerful when it comes to fitness and weight loss. Why is that?

It is because the path to being lean and healthy is a long and grueling one. We all know this but why do so many quit before they achieve their ultimate goal? One word:
Excuses

We all have them but what separates those who are fit and those who are not are the amount of excuses employed. Excuses are the easy way out and they are debilitating. “I had a long day at work”, “I am having marital and family problems”, “I am under the weather”, and “It costs too much money”. Those are some of the many popular excuses we hear. Granted, life happens as they say. Sometimes things are out of our control but our health and well-being are well within our grasp. We have a client that is leaving us in a week. She lost nearly 90 pounds since starting about 15 months ago! The one thing that was certain about her is that we never heard her make an excuse for either missing a workout, not working out hard, and especially regarding her diet. Her stresses in life were never used as an excuse and that goes for anyone who is in great shape. I can speak for her by saying she is the happiest she has ever felt in her life and it all started with that first step!

We are proud to train a lot of successful individuals here at Premier. How did all these people become successful in life? I’m almost certain they didn’t make excuses along the way and they also didn’t become successful over night. To most it took many years of hard work and perseverance. Fitness works the same way. It is not an overnight success. It takes time, hard work, and a refusal to quit!

So bag the excuses and fast aspirations and take that first step on a thousand mile journey. Make every step count and make every mile the hardest one, each and every time. You do that and I guarantee you will achieve your goals and be healthy and happy.
Get It Done!

One final note: Always ask your trainer(s) for advice and guidance. That’s what we are here for. You can never ever ask too many questions. There are also no dumb questions. The dumbest question is the one not asked. Tap into our brains!

Andrew Clauser is a graduate of West Chester University and holds a bachelors degree in Kinesiology with a focus in Exercise Science. His main areas of interest involve exercise psychology and nutrition science. Andrew has been a professional fitness coach since 2006

Aerobics vs. Strength Training At West Chester Health Clubs

If you’ve made the commitment to improve your health or fitness level, West Chester Health Clubs is just what you’re looking for! If your goals are to lose weight, you may think that strength training isn’t for you – after all, you want to get lean, not bulk up! On the other side of the coin, weight lifters may consider aerobic training a waste of time. The truth is, both of these disciplines are important and will help you reach your goals, no matter what they are. In this article, we’ll show you why you should incorporate both aerobics and strength training at West Chester Health Clubs.

Why aerobics is good for you

Weight lifters should take heart – aerobics doesn’t necessarily mean donning spandex and jumping around to electronic music. Aerobic exercise, or cardio exercise, is any exercise that raises your heart rate. There are dozens of benefits of adding an aerobic work out to your fitness regime. It makes your heart stronger, increases your lung capacity, burns fat and helps raise the metabolism. Even if your goals don’t include losing fat, aerobics can be beneficial, as it can help increase your energy, giving you the strength to increase the number of weight lifting reps or keep up with the ball on the tennis court.

A good aerobic work out is one in which the body reaches its target heart rate and sustains it anywhere from ten to twenty minutes at a time. When it comes to aerobic exercise, the possibilities are endless; exercises could include running, cycling, swimming, even walking, not to mention the dozens of cardio machines available at West Chester Health Clubs.

Why strength training is good for you

Those that are trying to lose weight may dismiss strength training as unnecessary, but the truth is that is can be very beneficial. Just as aerobic exercise helps raise the metabolism, strength training can help sustain it. This is because the more muscle mass you have, the more calories you’ll burn over the course of a day. But that doesn’t mean you’ll have to bulk up muscle mass in order to reap the benefits – even those with lean muscles can profit.

In addition to helping the body burn calories more efficiently, benefits of strength training include protecting the joints and even preventing the risk of osteoporosis, as strength training helps build healthy bones as well as muscles. There is a wide variety of strength training techniques, including machines that can be found at West Chester Health Clubs that are great for beginners, as well as free weights, which can also aid in balance and coordination.

Both aerobics and strength training can help you reach your goal

It is widely accepted today by both researchers and fitness professionals that a fitness routine that incorporates both aerobics and strength training is the best way to reach your fitness goals. Each of these disciplines compliments the other and will help, no matter what your fitness goals are, from losing weight to becoming a better, faster, or stronger athlete, so try to include three sessions of aerobics per week and two sessions of strength training at West Chester Health Clubs, and you’ll see the difference in no time!

If you have questions or need an extra push, contact a personal trainer at West Chester Health Clubs. A personal trainer will be able to motivate you to challenge yourself and they’ll ensure you reach your fitness goals!

How To Determine Your Fitness Goals With Personal Training In Exton

Personal training in Exton generally seems like the step to take after you have determined your goals. Goals are an essential part of fitness success, right? Agreed. But how do you get started setting fitness goals? How do you set realistic goals and what’s the next step? Often setting up personal training in Exton can help you start determining these goals.

Tips For Setting Fitness Goals

The best advice when setting goals is to use the past to determine your future. If you have never had personal training in Exton, these are some guidelines:

  • Look at what you enjoy
  • Look at what has worked for you in the past and use that as a foundation for your renewed commitment to fitness
  • Write down—really in writing—what you want to accomplish
  • Consider your timeline if you have one

With this information in hand, personal training in Exton is the next step. Your trainer will review goals with you, decide what can be accomplished safely and healthily and in what timeframe, and construct a fitness plan of action with you. Using your goals as a starting point, a good trainer will expand and add to them so that you really have a complete plan that will maximize your fitness efforts and get you where you want to be.

Keeping It Real

When setting goals, it is important to make them both challenging and achievable. You want your fitness goals to be high enough, but not so high that you cannot attain them and will become frustrated and discouraged.

In the beginning, you might not understand what is and isn’t realistic to expect if you are not familiar with exercising or with your abilities. A personal trainer will have a much better idea of what can realistically be accomplished overall and within given periods of time.

Moving On

Goals are important when you are starting out in fitness, but goal-setting does not end once you’ve accomplished what you set out to do. With personal training in Exton, there is always room to grow and plenty of benefits to be had. Once you reach your core goals, talk to your trainer and set your sights higher. Determine what else you are capable of achieving, and start anew. Make your goals as lofty or as simple as you like—perhaps you want to run a marathon, but if you just want to maintain motivation and continued good health that’s okay, too. Whatever your new-found goals, your personal trainer will know what the best ways to keep your interest and to reach those objectives are.

Goals in fitness are ever changing. They are the thing that will get you going at the outset and also the thing that keeps you moving and succeeding as time goes on. Spend some time setting your fitness goals based on the past and the future to ensure your complete success.
